Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 Verse 30

देही नित्यमवध्योऽयं देहे सर्वस्य भारत ।
तस्मात्सर्वाणि भूतानि न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥२-३०॥

dehi nityamo avadhyo ayam dehe sarvasya bharata
tasmat sarvani bhutani na tvam shochitam arhasi  ॥ 2-30 ॥

Transliteration

In Bhagavad Gita chapter 2 verse 30 Lord Krishna enumerates fundamental difference between deh and dehi. Remaining attached to deh (the body) Arjuna would never gain anything in life as dehi (soul that manifested a body) was finally governing in cosmos. As per Krishna... dehi (the immortal soul) was eternal, imperishable... existing from times immemorial (shashvat)!

Lord Krishna says, O Bharatvanshi Arjuna: the soul atman existing within body of every living being was immortal... could never be destroyed or killed by one! None in cosmic system could kill soul atman, the spirit within! This system of life continues unabated from beginning of time. For this very reason... thou art not supposed to lament for death that was never in control of one!

Both birth and death were part of cosmic life. For a soul atman, the spirit within... this cycle of manifestations was an ongoing process until it reached stage of absolute purity. The stage of absolute purity is reached when human beings gained enlightenment in their lifetime. It was not worthy of Arjuna, a Kshatriya warrior to grieve for anticipated death of all loved ones in the battle of Mahabharata.


The Explanation:

Through Bhagavad Gita chapter 2 verse 30 Lord Krishna highlights to Arjuna that our soul atman, the spirit within residing in our heart was all the time governing. Why lament for body (the outer covering, the garment) as none had control over death of human form. Based on karma performed by one... death came automatically! Arjuna not wanting to kill his maternal grandfather Bhishma Pitamah and guru Dronacharya does not mean these people would escape death forever.

Both birth and death were not in control of one. Everything in cosmic system was governed by inscrutable laws of karma. As we sow so shall we reap... nothing less or more! Based on karma performed, human body survived for a particular span of life! The moment residual balance of karma demanded death of body... none could change this circle of life, not even God Almighty! God never interfered in the creation of his. He always acts as a Dhrishta (onlooker).

The biggest folly of mankind was assuming body itself to be soul atman. Human beings perceived movement in body and not the subtle soul atman... hence the folly! In reality, souls' atmans (the consciousness) pervade every part of cosmos. Spiritually speaking, the world of souls' atmans was the only truth of life. The doctrine of Maya (veil of illusion) propagated by Adi Shankaracharya proves this beyond doubt. The moment death of body occurs, the spirit within manifests a new form based on residual balance of karma of that moment.

At no stage of life we could ever negate presence of soul atman within every living being. We were a spirit, a consciousness manifesting a body! If it were so... there was no reason for Arjuna to lament for death of few. As per Krishna, the soul atman existing within every living being was not distinct. All emanated from the same source... God Almighty himself (Brahman in Hinduism). The moment big bang occurred... all pure souls atmans scattered all over cosmos at unimaginable speeds! In the melee, the hurtling souls' atmans gathered impurities similar as a rolling ball gathers moss.

To cleanse self of dross impurities within starts cosmic life cycle of every soul atman. It is through cycle of 8.4 million manifestations a soul atman finally reaches cosmic end of life when it liberated self from cycle of birth and death forever! When souls' atmans were the only truth of life, why lament over death of those dear to us! For a spiritual seeker, the fear of death vanishes after reaching a particular spiritual level. This is the level that Krishna wanted Arjuna to reach, realize.

Through bhagavad gita chapter 2 verse 30 Lord Krishna conveys a very vital meaning for those interested in undertaking spiritual journey in present life. Follow the dictates of your soul atman, the spirit within... if you wanted to reach god in present life. By keeping self glued to Moha (extreme emotional attachment)... a spiritual seeker never gained anything in life! For serious travelers of spiritual path... scuttling all earthly relationships was mandated by God Almighty, not in control of one!

We just could not ride two boats at the same time. Cutting all shackles of Moha (extreme emotional attachment) was necessitated to establish absolute control over five senses and mind. Unless we succeed in establishing absolute control over five senses and mind, karma could never be negated to zero! For reaching stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana), for reaching stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi (stage of absolute nothingness)... complete removal of dross impurities within a soul atman was something one could not do without.

For a serious seeker of spirituality... differentiating physical self (the body) from real self (soul atman) was an absolute must! This becomes possible by travelling path of absolute truthfulness always and ever. Unless we were truthful life, we could never follow dictates of Lord Krishna within. Every soul atman is Lord Krishna existing within our heart. We could always follow dictates of Lord Krishna... by hearing the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman that seems to come from within our heart! This becomes a reality only when we walked path of absolute truthfulness always and ever.

In the battle of Mahabharata, Arjuna was the only one competent in whole Pandava army who could hear the sweet small inner voice of his soul atman, the voice of Lord Krishna within. Guided by the voice of this soul atman, guided by voice of Lord Krishna within... Pandavas finally won battle of Mahabharata!

For a serious traveler of spirituality... remaining truthful in life was a very vital aspect of spiritual path. Not a single lapse on path of absolute truthfulness was permitted. In the present materialistic world, how many people world over could vouch that they had been truthful in life all throughout, without committing even a single mistake. Mere indulgence in sacred scriptures does not lead one to stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana)... nor following 12 years of celibacy in a single go. For one to become an enlightened one... a bodhi, a Jina... a Mahavira forever, becoming truthful in life is of utmost importance.

Most spiritual travelers of present times did not recognize this vital ingredient of spiritual path.

Lord Krishna says... I was all the time existing within you, but you failed to follow my dictates all the time. Practice truthfulness in this life all the time... and I shall become available to you always and ever. The complete gist of Srimad Bhagavad Gita was an allegory to understand battle of dharma (righteousness) and adharma (lawlessness) that continues within us all the time. Our ego, our bloated ego all the time prompts us to follow path of adharma (evil) all the time.

Contrary to this, our soul atman, the spirit within existing in our heart prompts us all the time to follow path of dharma (righteousness) so that it could liberate self from cycle of birth and death at the earliest. Unless we followed dictates of our soul atman, the dross impurities within a soul atman could not be removed! We must never forget human form was the highest manifest stage in cosmic life cycle. It was only through human form... our soul atman, the spirit within became free forever, when human beings finally reached stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) in their lifetime.

As per Lord Krishna goal of human life was to assist our soul atman, the spirit within in reaching cosmic end of life... 8.4 millionth manifestation! All teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita were directed towards Arjuna recognizing these vital facts of human life. Indulgence in Moha (extreme emotional attachment) was only part of spiritual journey. Essence of life lay in travelling path of absolute truthfulness always and ever. In simple words, Lord Krishna conveys, if a relative followed path of evil (adharma) then we must give one a due fight based on inexplicable laws of dharma (righteousness). Following path of dharma (righteousness) was our birthright and should be followed all the time!

Even if our loved ones, relatives and friends got killed in this war of dharma (righteousness)... we would not be termed a sinner in eyes of god. Most human beings world over faced this dilemma when dealing with cheating partners, relatives and friends. On the altar of dharma (righteousness)... we had every right to face those siding evil head-on. We must never be cowed down by their evil tendencies. In the face of evil... we must never express cowardice as exhibited by Arjuna, no matter what the reason. When soul atman, the spirit within was immortal, how could one commit a sin when dealing with dharma (righteousness). If we saw god in all, for the sake of re-establishing dharma... we had the right to kill one!

Krishna finally says it was only owing to presence of ego within, human beings failed to realise existence of a soul atman within their heart!
