Transliteration

Sanjaya while narrating live commentary to Dhritarashtra about affairs in the battlefield of Mahabharata addresses
him as Parantapa (a king who after great tapasya/penances gained maturity in art of war and was greatly feared by
the enemy). Sanjaya addressing Dhritarashtra as Parantapa reflects the collective power of Kaurava camp, not
individual king Dhritarashtra.
Sanjaya further addresses Arjuna as Gudakesha (one who succeeds in establishing
absolute control over sleep) and Arjuna addressing Lord Krishna as Rishikesha (controller of all five senses and
mind). One who succeeds in establishing absolute control over sleep was near to reaching stage of enlightenment
(kaivalya jnana).
A spiritual aspirant who finally succeeds in establishing absolute control over
five senses and mind knows the way to God Almighty. In absence of Lord Krishna, the controller of five senses and
mind... none could reach God in present life! It is only through teachings of Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita; human
beings finally succeed in establishing absolute control over five senses and mind.
Sanjaya further narrates to Kaurava king Dhritarashtra: After expressing insurmountable grief
to Lord Krishna (Rishikesha), as detailed in bhagavad gita chapter 2 verse 8... Arjuna (Gudakesha) finally becomes
mum after telling Krishna in clear terms that he was not prepared to fight his enemy... the Kauravas! Sanjaya also
refers to Lord Krishna as Govinda (one who has won his true inner self by establishing absolute control over five
senses and mind).
The Explanation

Bhagavad Gita chapter 2 verse 9 reflects upon
indecisiveness of Arjuna that he displayed in battle of Mahabharata. In spite of Krishna advising him to fight this
battle of dharma (righteousness) against evil forces of adharma (lawlessness)... Arjuna prefers cowardice when he
clearly states to Krishna that he was not prepared to fight the Kauravas, fearing he might become a sinner if he
killed his maternal grandfather Bhishma Pitamah and guru Dronacharya.
Arjuna did not want to fight those dear to his heart... his beloved maternal
grandfather Bhishma Pitamah and guru Dronacharya. Arjuna was resisting all logic and expressed inability to
exercise power of discrimination. Viewing narrowly and considering Lord Krishna as a friend and guide... Arjuna
failed to realize that Lord Krishna was a cosmic entity... an avatar of his era (God manifest in human form). Lord
Krishna was truly a messiah... saviour of his times!
As teachings comprised in Bhagavad Gita was a spiritual allegory... in Bhagavad
Gita chapter 2 verse 9, emphasis has been laid on control over five senses and mind. To reach god, to reach our
true inner self... to reach Lord Krishna, our establishing absolute control over five senses and mind was mandated
by god. In our spiritual journey as we neared god... one finally succeeds in establishing full control over sleep.
Arjuna able to do that spells that Arjuna was the right candidate for Lord Krishna to impart teachings of Bhagavad
Gita.
Control over sleep can only be established by one who step-by-step succeeds in
establishing absolute control over five senses and mind. Looking beyond literal meanings... in Bhagavad Gita
chapter 2 verse 8, Lord Krishna emphasizes need to exercise power of discrimination if one wanted to reach god in
present life. Remaining engulfed in feelings of Moha (extreme emotional attachment), no human being could succeed
in establishing absolute control over five senses and mind. We had to become a Gudakesha, Rishikesha, Govinda to
reach god in present life!
By indulging in rituals (path of religion), by indulging in prayers alone... one
reached nowhere! In essence, Lord Krishna clearly tells Arjuna to scuttle all feelings of Moha (extreme emotional
attachment) towards Kauravas as they sided with adharma (lawlessness) all the time. Lord Krishna further goads
Arjuna to fight this battle of dharma (righteousness) to root out evil from society forever. It was not a fight
between two parties... it was a fight to re-establish dharma (righteousness) forever.
As per Lord Krishna, Arjuna was duty-bound to follow his dictates! Why? When Arjuna
had already decided his absolute goal of life... all his reasoning to delay battle of Mahabharata was a ruse not
acceptable to Lord Krishna. Stated otherwise, if one were to reach god in present life... a limited time span of 70
to 80 years of earthly abode, one just could not waste time on inconsistencies of physical manifest world. All
earthly ties were ephemeral... temporal!
To reach god... we had to overpower five senses and mind, finally negating karma to
zero forever! Developing absolute control over sleep was a byproduct of spiritual journey. When a soul atman neared
stage of absolute purity... the need for human beings to sleep subsided forever. Nuances of spiritual journey were
multifaceted. One who undertakes spiritual journey in right earnestness never loses anything in life. This is the
biggest gift of god to mankind. On spiritual path... we as a human being were always a winner in the
end!
